Musicology Events in 2011-12

Spring 2012

29 January: The CUA Latin American Center for Graduate Studies in Music, in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute, presents a lecture and concert in honor of Robert L. Parker, distinguished scholar of Mexican music. The concert program will feature music by Carlos Chávez and selected songs by Silvestre Revueltas. The program will feature faculty, alumni, and students from the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music. Preceding the concert, Dr. Christina Taylor Gibson, clinical assistant professor of musicology at CUA, will deliver a lecture titled “Carlos Chávez and Modernism.” A reception will follow. The Mexican Cultural Institute (2829 16th St. N.W., Washington, D.C.), 2:00 pm.

28 February: Memorial service for Dr. Steven Strunk, Professor of Composition and Theory, in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 10:00 am. A reception follows in John Paul Hall.

28 March: Dr. Andrew H. Weaver, associate professor and head of musicology at CUA, gives a presentation titled " 'Da hab ich ihr gestanden': Dichterliebe and the Telling of Narrative in Song" in the DMA Musicology Colloquium at Peabody. Peabody Institute, Conservatory Building, room 308C, 5:00 pm.

29 March: AMS Lecture Series at the Library of Congress: Thomas Brothers (Duke University), "Louis Armstrong: The Making of a Great Melodist." Coolidge Auditorium, noon.

14 April: Spring Meeting of the Capital Chapter of the American Musicological Society, George Mason University, at which Ph.D. candidate Karen Uslin is giving a paper and PhD. student Sara Pecknold is a finalist for the Lowens Award for Student Research. 10 May: Dr. Andrew H. Weaver hosts a musicology lunch at his home, 12 noon.

Fall 2011

8 September: Annual Beginning-of-the-School-Year Musicology Reception. Latin American Music Center (Ward Hall, room 138), 12:35 pm.

10 September: AMS Lecture Series at the Library of Congress: William Meredith (Director of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies and Professor of Music at San José State University) and pianist Malcolm Bilson, "What the Autograph Can Tell Us: Beethoven’s Sonata in E Major, Opus 109." Coolidge Auditorium, noon.

17 September: As part of the Mutual Inspirations Festival hosted by the Embassy of the Czech Republic, Prof. Murry Sidlin conducts the CUA Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, “From the New World” at the National Museum of the American Indian. 7:00 pm.

1 October: As part of the Mutual Inspirations Festival, Michael Beckerman (Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Music, New York University) presents a Dvorák Symposium and Lecture-Recital at the Library of Congress, featuring Dvorák manuscripts that have not been in the United States for over a century. Whittall Pavilion and Coolidge Auditorium, 1:00 pm.

15 October: Fall Meeting of the Capital Chapter of the American Musicological Society, George Washington University, at which Ph.D student Cait Miller and Ph.D. alumnus Lars Helgert are giving papers. Click here for the program and local arrangements information.

24 October: In advance of the Musical Theatre Division's production of Bernstein's On the Town (October 28-30), Mark Eden Horowitz (senior music specialist at the Library of Congress and adjunct faculty member at CUA) gives a presentation titled "The Secret Life of On the Town," discussing materials about the show from the Leonard Bernstein collection at the Library of Congress. The presentation will also feature live performances of numbers from the show. Ward Hall, John Paul Hall, 4:10 pm.

27 October: Maria Alicia Volpe, Professor and Chair of Musicology at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro-UFRJ, gives a presentation titled "Indianist Operas by 19th-Century Brazilian Composers." Ward Hall, room 211, 10:30 am.

10-13 November: Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society, San Francisco. We will meet for a CUA musicology lunch on Saturday 12 November at 12:15.

19 December: CUA Musicology Holiday Lunch, Colonel Brook's Tavern, 1:00 pm.
