Spring 2009 

9-22 March: The Catholic University President's Festival of the Arts presents: "If It's Not One Thing, It's Another," featuring Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer-Prize winning musical Sunday in the Park with George, Mendelssohn's Elijah, concerts by the Rome Trio and CUA Symphony Orchestra, new music premieres, lectures by Mark Eden Horowitz (Library of Congress) and R. Larry Todd (Duke University), and more!  Click here for more information.

26 March: AMS Lecture Series at the Library of Congress: Jeffrey Magee (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign): "Now It Can Be Told: The Unknown Irving Berlin." Coolidge Auditorium, 7:00 pm.

March and April: The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music presents "The Poppea Project," a collaboration between the divisions of Vocal Performance and Musicology.  Click here for more information about the course taught by Dr. Andrew H. Weaver that serves as the foundation for the project.  Events include:

  • 12 March: Guest Lecture by Ellen Rosand (Professor of Music, Yale University), "Defending Seneca from his Detractors (Ancient and Modern)." Ward Hall, room 127, 3:00 pm.
  • 6 April: Opera Preview: Cast members perform scenes from Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, with commentary by Dr. Andrew H. Weaver, stage director Rachel Barham, and guest speaker Wendy Heller (Professor of Music, Princeton University).  John Paul Hall in Ward Hall, 4:10 pm.
  • 17-19 April: The CUA Opera Theatre presents Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea.  Ward Recital Hall.  7:30 pm on April 17 and 18; 2:00 pm on April 19.

4 April: The Spring Meeting of the Capital Chapter of the American Musicological Society at Georgetown University, at which Ph.D. candidate Alicia Kopfstein-Penk and MA student Katerina Lichtenwalter are finalists for the Lowens Award for student research.  Click here for the program and abstracts.

28 April: The CUA Opera Workshop presents Opera Scenes, with commentary by MA/MSLS student Janet McKinney.  Ward Recital Hall, 7:30 pm.

16 May: University Commencement Exercises.


Fall 2008

4 September: MA/MSLS student Janet McKinney hosts a Musicology cocktail party at her home, 7:00 pm.

18 September: AMS Lecture Series at the Library of Congress: Annegret Fauser (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), "After Pearl Harbor: Music, War, and the Library of Congress."  Coolidge Auditorium, 7:00 pm.

1 October: Special Guest Lecture: Kate van Orden (Associate Professor of Music, The University of California, Berkeley), "Music, Civility, and Print Culture in 16th-Century France."  Ward Hall, room 211, 1:00 pm.

11 October: Fall Meeting of the Capital Chapter of the American Musicological Society at Randolph-Macon College, at with Dr. Andrew H. Weaver is giving a paper.  Click here for the program and abstracts.

6-9 November: Annual Meeting of the American Musicological Society, Nashville.  We will meet for a CUA musicology lunch at 12:15 on Saturday 8 November.

8 December: CUA Musicology Holiday Lunch at Colonel Brook's Tavern, 1:00 pm.
